Gophers leave a horseshoe-shaped mound on the surface when building a new tunnel.  This mound is made by the rodent pushing the dirt out of the new excavation.  Since they come to the surface out of your soil on a 45 deg angle, the dirt in pushed in one direction.  This makes a flat side where no soil is pushed and a fan-shaped mound where the soil is pushed out of the tunnel system which is visable from your landscaping.
